"I want to stop smoking but I don't want to use the patch."

For some people, stopping smoking is as simple as making the decision and then staying firm. For others, it seems a constant struggle and source of embarrassment with each failed attempt. Willpower plays a role, in that the smoker must want to quit and be ready to deal with some uncomfortable moments when the cravings strike. However, there are natural ways to support the body and mind while withdrawing from nicotine.

One of the more important aspects to stopping smoking is increasing physical activity. This encourages detoxification, releases mood-enhancing endorphins, provides an outlet for stress, and helps with the potential for gaining weight. Generally ex-smokers gain weight because they replace the hand to mouth motion of smoking with food. While smoking does encourage a faster metabolism, it does so in a detrimental manner, aging the body much faster than normal. Regular exercise consisting of cardio, toning and stretching will be a better way of keeping your figure while regaining your health. A pack a day smoker is spending roughly £150 a month. That would easily pay for a gym membership.

There are several complementary treatments that will help with stopping smoking. Hypnotism helps by reaching into the subconscious and breaking the psychological addiction and belief that the smoker is getting some sort of benefit from continuing the habit. Acupuncture and herbs help to detox the body, lessening the physical cravings. Seeing a nutritionist can help, especially as smoking robs the body of vital nutrients.

Homeopathic remedies to use are Caladium and Tabacum, both taken in 8x potency. Take these every two hours initially and then reduce as the cravings subside. To help with the psychological aspect of quitting, the remedies Nux vomica and Staphysagria are both excellent for the irritability often experienced. Keep busy. A craving typically lasts no longer than three minutes so have a strategy in place before you stop. Drink loads of cold water, take regular exercise and enjoy long deep breaths.
