Metabolic Profile (Organic Acid Profiling) Provided by Metametrix/IWDL Organic acid profiling provides a view into the body's cellular metabolic processes and the efficiency of metabolic function. Identifying metabolic blocks that can be treated nutritionally allows individual tailoring vitamin and mineral supplementation that can lead to improved health and wellbeing and the prevention of disease. Organic acids are metabolic intermediates that, in health, are largely degraded to carbon dioxide and water. Marked accumulation of specific organic acids detected in urine often signals a metabolic inhibition or block. The metabolic block may be due to a nutrient deficiency, an inherited enzyme deficit, toxic build-up, or drug effect. Several of the analytes are markers of intestinal bacterial or yeast overgrowth. From a single urine specimen the following can be assessed: The following markers are assessed: Oxidative Damage Marker Deoxyguanosine is a marker specific for oxidative damage to DNA. Specific Nutrient Markers Kynurenate and Xanthurenate elevations in urine indicate Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency. Elevated Formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) excretion is indicative of Folic Acid deficiency. Inflammatory Markers Quinolinate is elevated in inflammatory reactions. Hepatic Detoxification Marker Glucarate is a biomarker indicating detoxification challenge or exposure to xenobiotic toxins, alcohol, or drugs. Intestinal Dysbiosis Markers Elevated Indican values reveal intestinal bacterial overgrowth. D-lactate elevation is an indicator of dysbiosis caused by carbohydrate malabsorption. The test requires a morning urine sample (1st pass) the sample needs to be frozen and sent to the lab for analysis. |
