Q. How can I support my liver to function more effectively?

A. The liver is a remarkable organ. It is the largest in the body, weighing about three pounds and is like a sponge filled with blood. It plays a vital role in the body, detoxifying everything we come into contact with, whether food, alcohol, pollution or medications. It also directly linked to metabolism and the absorption and storage of essential nutrients. Amazingly, you can have a good part of your liver cut away and it will regenerate. It is the only organ in the body with this capability. Keeping your liver strong is one of the best things you can do for your health.

Some signs that your liver is under par include poor digestion with gas and bloating, waking feeling tired even after enough sleep, weight loss or gain, a yellow tinge to the skin, eyes or tongue, headaches and irritability all point to liver stress. In fact, so many functions directly rely on a strong liver that it's worth building it up just for good measure.

To help increase the functioning of the liver, try this tonic each morning on an empty stomach. Take juice of ý a lemon, add one tablespoon of virgin olive oil, and about Ñ cup of red grape juice. Whisk briskly, drink in one and follow with a large glass of water. This stimulates the liver and will help with digestion, especially if you have a tendency to constipation.

For further strengthening, you can take a herbal remedy to help support the liver and reduce possible damage. Get the liquid form of Chelidonium or Carduus Marianus and take five drops in a bit of water every day. You can order this from Helios Pharmacy 01892 537 254 and they will post it to you.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, eat more fruit and veg, cut down on meat and dairy, and reduce your consumption of alcohol and drugs, unless prescription. Eat smaller meals more frequently and make sure you don't get constipated. Make sure your fats are cold pressed, such as flax or olive oil. Absolutely no saturated fats if your liver is under stress, so no more fry ups, or at least save them for the odd weekend.
