Q. Mosquitoes love me. What can I do for the awful bites? A: The best thing is to not get bitten in the first place. Sweat, perfume and sweet smelling skin attract mosquitoes. You can start taking fresh garlic or supplements along with extra B vitamins as this changes the taste of your blood, making you a less appealing snack. For repellents, you can either get the really strong stuff with DEET in it, but this can make you break out in a rash, especially if you have sensitive skin. A natural option is Citronella essential oil. When using on the skin, dilute about 5ml of the oil into at least 100ml of carrier oil such as almond oil. You could also dilute it in water, keeping a spray bottle nearby. You may smell a bit funny but it will keep the bugs from biting you. Have citronella candles burning while outdoors, especially at dusk when mosquitoes like to feed. They tend to respond to light and are most active in low light hours after dusk and in the hours prior to dawn. Get screens for your doors and windows and look into the 'bite shields' on the market. If you do get bitten, and the area is swollen, hot, red and shiny, take Apis 30c until the bite reduces to normal. If the area of the bite is cold and feels better for an ice cube held against it, use the remedy Ledum 30c. Hypericum 30c is excellent if the bites are painful. Caladium 30c is for those bites that itch intensely and feel like they are burning. Staphysagria 30c is for itching that seems to change location on scratching. Take the remedies three times a day until the bites reduce. Finally, if your bites do get infected, clean them well with soap and water and get some HyperCal tincture, which is a combination of Hypericum and Calendula. Put ten drops in a teacup of water and dab on the bites throughout the day. You can order these remedies directly from Nelsons Pharmacy, who will send them in the post to you.
