Homeopathy Homeopathy is a safe and gentle system of medicine that has been used worldwide for over two hundred years. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a physician in the late 1700s, felt the medical procedures of his time were doing more harm than good and he searched for an alternative. Through experimenting on himself and his friends, he found a method that allowed healing without toxic side effects. He based homeopathy on 'like cures like', an ancient principle used for centuries in different forms of healing. Homeopathy is like a springboard for the body's inherent intelligence, or vital force, stimulating self-healing. The art of homeopathic prescribing relies not only on finding the most appropriate remedy, but also matching the strength of the remedy to the energy of the patient. Homeopathy treats not the 'dis-ease' of the body but rather the symptoms of expression. Homeopathic remedies are specific to the individual’s experience of pain. Take headaches as an example. They can be blinding, pounding, deafening, aching or stabbing. People show their sickness in different ways and each person will need a different remedy or combination of remedies for healing. Homeopathic remedies are made from hundreds of substances found in the natural world. These include plants, minerals and metals, which in large amounts or if used in raw form could cause adverse reactions. Hahnemann found that if he diluted and potentised the substance he could release its energy in a safe and non-toxic manner. A remedy is made into different strengths or potencies depending on how many times it is diluted and struck against an immovable object. This unique method of remedy preparation gives us various strengths in the medicines, and many options when prescribing. What happens in a consultation? The homeopath will need to gather a lot of information about you as an individual in order to prescribe. This includes family medical history, personal medical history, personal likes and dislikes, environmental influences and possible toxicity. During the consultation, the homeopath will want to know how you respond mentally and physically to your every day life and if this has a bearing on your complaint. The consultation is spent with you describing yourself in full so the homeopath can prescribe on your individuality and how your body is expressing its discomfort. How long does it take to work? This is a difficult question to answer definitively as each person will respond differently to the remedies. Additionally, lifestyle and diet play a very large role in health and healing, so the speed of recovery can be hastened with proper nutrition and exercise. A rough guide for homeopathy is a month of treatment for every year you have had a complaint. Again, this can work faster, particularly if the client makes positive changes in his or her life. How often do I need to see the Homeopath? The frequency with which you need to see the homeopath again depends on your complaint. Typically appointments are every three to four weeks initially. The remedies need time to implement positive change and meeting more often than this would usually be unnecessary. Once the client is feeling better, appointments can be spaced out further. Many clients continue their homeopathic treatment after the initial complaint has been helped, as homeopathy continues to strengthen the individual and prevent further illnesses. Homeopathy Case Study Each case is different in subtle ways and a homeopath will look for unique symptoms when prescribing. One hay fever patient presented with a family history of allergies, asthma in childhood and an overall worsening since the death of his father. He was given a remedy for his family susceptibility and sensitivity to allergens, a remedy for his unexpressed grief, and a remedy for the specific symptoms of his hay fever. Each of the remedies had hay fever in its ‘picture’ and the patient needed all the remedies in order to heal his particular hay fever. Not every person will have an emotional component to the complaint; sometimes it is simply hay fever. This illustrates the precise prescribing for him as an individual as he needed the grief addressed in addition to the sneezing and itchy eyes. practitioner details | pricing information Diagnostic Tests.
