Q: I suffer terribly from hay fever and I'm dreading the season. Can Homeopathy help?

A: Over 12 million people will experience hay fever symptoms from spring through to late summer with the release of different pollens. Homeopathy has been scientifically proven to treat hay fever just as well as conventional medicine and certainly better than placebo, without any side effects from the medication. Hay fever symptoms can range from annoying sneezing to debilitating depression with the general misery of having to avoid parks and the countryside. Homeopathic remedies address the wide spectrum of symptoms and strengthen the overall immunity of the person thus reducing the frequency and severity of the attacks.

There are homeopathic combination remedies available at health stores. While these can certainly help with the common symptoms of itchy, runny eyes and sneezing, they frequently fail to address the root of the problem. Often hay fever sufferers come from an 'atopic' family, or one in which other members of the family have hay fever, allergies, asthma, and/or eczema. Once the inherited sensitivity is treated the hay fever remedies work more effectively.

Each hay fever case is different in subtle ways and a homeopath will look for unique symptoms when prescribing. One hay fever patient presented with a family history of allergies, asthma in childhood and an overall worsening since the death of his father. He was given a remedy for his family susceptibility, a remedy for his unexpressed grief, and a remedy for the specific symptoms of his hay fever. This illustrates the precise prescribing for him as an individual, and yes, it worked.

Other factors to be considered are diet, exercise, supplementation, and of course, what is inhaled. Measures to improve overall health and the quality of the air will help the body handle the extra burden of the allergens. Buy an air filter with an ioniser to clean the air, especially for the bedroom. A study at the University of California-Davis found that eating yoghurt every day significantly reduced the frequency of hay fever attacks, particularly the grass pollen trigger. Consider adding a multi vitamin and mineral supplement and also take extra vitamin C in a buffered formula to stimulate the immune system and act as an anti-inflammatory.
