Q: I have fibroids and my doctor has suggested a hysterectomy. I'd rather avoid surgery if possible.

A: Fibroids are noncancerous growths composed of fibrous tissue and muscle, occurring in the uterus. It takes considerable skill to perform a myomectomy, a surgery to remove a fibroid that is producing unacceptable symptoms such as heavy bleeding. Rather than risk complications it is considered preferable to remove the entire uterus. Obviously any surgery carries risks and you are wise to seek alternatives before resorting to a full hysterectomy.

In ancient Greece, women were thought to have 'hysteria', meaning the uterus was floating through the body, disrupting other organs, and causing a mental disorder that only women suffered. 'Hyster' is also the root for our word hysterectomy, the cutting and removal of the womb. In terms of Chinese medicine, problems with the uterus often indicate a stagnation of Qi or energy, usually of emotional causation. Chinese medicine calls the uterus the second heart, as there is an energetic channel that links the uterus with the heart. It lies in the area of the second chakra, the place of creativity and sexuality.

As you are understandably reluctant to have surgery, I would suggest you look at a combination of homeopathy and acupuncture to treat your fibroids. So long as you are not in a life-threatening situation you have some time to treat your condition with alternative therapies. Homeopathy will help address the possible emotional causation for the fibroids, in addition to helping shrink them in size, lessening the effects, which can be alarming and painful. Acupuncture helps regulate and balance the flow of energy to the uterus, and indeed release the blocked channels that may cause a fibrous build up in that organ.

I suggest you get some 'thlaspi bursa pastoris' or Shephard's Purse, which is an herb specific to helping uterine fibroids and bleeding. Buy it in the liquid tincture form and take five drops twice a day in water. This will help to heal the uterus and stop the pain and bleeding. Please be sure to continue to monitor your condition and again, I advise you seek professional assistance from a qualified practitioner to find the root cause for the fibroids.
