Dieting

Recent headlines indicate that lawsuits are popping up against food manufacturers such as Kraft and McDonald's. Consumers with heart disease, diabetes, cancers and strokes linked to obesity are pointing the finger at companies who knowingly flog their fatty fare. Yet as I worked at several Boot's branches last month for Homeopathy Awareness week, I noticed shelves of liquid meal replacements selling out over lunchtime. One of the more frequent questions I was asked was 'Can homeopathy help me get thinner?'

Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows that the standard equation is to eat less and move more. I would say eat better. The back pages of magazines are full of the latest diet pill, either to dump excess water, block the body's absorption of fat, or fill the stomach with gums to trick the stomach into thinking it is full. Next to those ads are all the cosmetic surgery models, nakedly parading their newly sculpted bodies. In the movies, we are left comparing ourselves to the lithe actresses and hunky men. Small wonder we feel compelled to drink instead of chew.

Food, often sugar, is used as a reward when we are children. As Pink Floyd said, 'you can't have a pudding 'til you eat all your meat.' This sets us up to be overweight adults, reaching for food as a comfort. The dangerous side is when we are manipulated emotionally into then feeling guilty, and moving into the sadly prevalent anorexia and bulimia, or overdosing on exercise and diet pills. Food can trigger emotional responses in us, or conversely, we use food to hide our emotions.

It is entirely possible to find freedom from the guilt and hatred associated with food and negative body image. It requires consciousness of your emotions and what is really 'eating you up.' Homeopathy helps to bring awareness of harmful patterns that may have been set up in childhood without even realising it. Seeing a nutritionist will also help you choose healthier foods and find a system that works for you as an individual, whatever your lifestyle. You can take control of your health again, one emotion and one mouthful at a time.
