Q: I always feel tired. Could I have ME?

A: One of the effects of modern life is TATT- tired all the time. I see it often in my practise and it creeps up on the person without warning, until of course, they are chronically tired. There are several names for this condition: myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), postviral fatigue syndrome (PVS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). These names all refer to a complex array of symptoms, which may mimic other illnesses, but where no medical cause has been found.

Symptoms can be vague and difficult to pinpoint. There can be persistent infections, sore throats, chronic colds, sore or swollen glands and lymph nodes, muscular and joint aches and headaches. It can also affect the gastrointestinal system with nausea, flatulence and diarrhoea. Common too is the feeling that no matter how much one sleeps it never seems enough. There can be impaired concentration and memory loss, plus changes in appetite and emotional outbursts of anger or weeping. Obviously this makes it very difficult to definitively diagnose.

Often it is a case of 'never been well since' _____. Some people find they never recovered fully after flu, or a trauma, or some other stress in their lives that depleted the system. It may be related to the Epstein-Barr virus, which can cause glandular fever, or some other viral infection from which the person never regained health. It is interesting to note that women are three times more likely than men to develop ME and it primarily affects the 30-40 years age group. Generally speaking, people who have a depleted system from poor diet, lack of exercise, long work hours and environmental toxicity are more susceptible than those with a strong immune system.

I have had good success with treating chronic fatigue. Using homeopathic remedies and nutritional advice, my clients have been able to regain a good portion of their former vitality, with some even saying their energy has increased. Bear in mind that it is not a quick road to recovery from chronic fatigue. Often the system has been under stress for a good while, and it will take some time to rebuild the energy.
