Q: I have chronic back pain and the long hours at my desk are killing me. What can I do? A: You may have an underlying condition you need to have addressed. But first, are you sitting up straight? How much support does your chair offer? Do you take exercise and fully stretch? Finally, how old is your mattress? If you are paying attention to these areas and still have back pain, there are different options to explore. First, there may be a structural misalignment in your spine, resulting in pulled muscles, or a trapped nerve, causing pain. Catherine Godbolt uses McTimoney Chiropractics, which is a very gentle method of realigning the spine. Low force adjustments are used to ensure the body's nerve supply is functioning optimally. She will also check the joints in your body to see if, for example, a bad knee is throwing out your back. Another successful treatment for pain relief and to speed healing is acupuncture. Your overall health will be reviewed before commencing treatment, as the practitioner will want to ensure there isn't an underlying imbalance with another part of the body, such as the kidneys or digestive system. Acupuncture works on the principle that there are lines of energy in the body called meridians and pain is relieved by correcting blocks in that energy using fine needles and an herb called moxa. Sylvia Schroer and Tosca Anstis are both acupuncturists experienced in treating back pain. If your pain does not result from a misaligned spine or other cause, perhaps a sports massage would be of benefit. Massage increases blood flow to the muscles, in addition to relaxing the autonomic nervous system, which in turn will settle down the entire body. Sports massage is the catch phrase for a deeper style of massage in which adhesions are pulled apart and tight connective tissue is eased. The depth of pressure is adjusted to each client so if you are particularly sore, I won't be going at you with the same strength I would use on a seasoned rugby player! Other treatments to consider are Alexander Technique, which teaches you proper posture, regular yoga may help and think about Pilates, which strengthens the core stability of the body. © Adrianna Holman Registered Homeopath (RSHom) |
