Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a body conditioning method based on the work of Joseph Pilates who focused on achieving harmony between mind and body. Focusing on the needs of the individual, Pilates builds strength without adding bulk and balances strength with flexibility.

Pilates works in a different way to other fitness techniques, targeting the deep postural muscles, building strength from within, rebalancing the body and bringing it in to correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body, making it longer, leaner and more toned. It will improve your posture and is a great way to relieve stress and tension.

Pilates offers both mental and physical training, literally teaching you to be in control of your body. The core of the method is ‘awareness of your own body’ and each and every exercise is built around its eight key principles:

Relaxation; Breathing; Concentration; Flowing Movements; Alignment; Co-ordination; Centring; Stamina

Pilates is suitable for all levels of fitness and is particularly beneficial as part of a rehabilitation programme.
